Divided Memory

Divided Memory is an original abstract mixed media painting by contemporary artist Sergio Aranda, created in 2021.

Structured fields of turquoise, mineral grey and deep blue divide the composition into vertical sections, while fragments of metallic gold move across their boundaries, connecting areas that initially appear separate.

The work explores the tension between structure and erosion. Precise divisions coexist with distressed surfaces, scratches, translucent layers and irregular traces of material, creating the impression of a surface that has been constructed, weathered and transformed over time.

Gold appears throughout the composition not simply as a decorative accent, but as a fragmented trace — sometimes exposed and luminous, sometimes almost disappearing beneath the surrounding layers.

Subtle marks and imperfections remain deliberately visible. They record different stages of the painting process and give the surface its sense of history, allowing what was previously covered to continue influencing what we see.

Part of the Strata of Time collection, Divided Memory reflects Sergio Aranda’s exploration of accumulated matter, transformation and the traces that survive beneath a finished surface.

This is a unique, one-of-a-kind original artwork, not a print or reproduction.

Art Care & Preservation

How to Preserved and Protect Your Sergio Aranda Masterpiece
Every original artwork by Sergio Aranda is meticulously handcrafted using natural materials, fine sand, and mineral compounds. To guarantee its timeless permanence, each painting is finished and sealed with multiple protective coats of premium, archival-grade artist varnish. This protective layer shields the deep pigments and heavy, sculptural textures from environmental factors.
To ensure your fine art investment maintains its pristine condition and tactile depth for decades to come, please follow these professional conservation guidelines:
  • Display & Lighting: While the archival varnish provides high-end UV protection, we highly recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to direct, harsh sunlight. To fully appreciate the shifting shadows of the sculptural gesso, display the piece under high-quality ambient lighting or dedicated LED art spotlights.
  • Dusting & Cleaning: Due to the rich, sand-crusted organic texture, dust may settle over time. Never use water, liquid cleaners, damp cloths, or chemical solvents on the surface. To clean, gently sweep the textured relief using a dry, clean, soft-bristled brush (such as a premium makeup brush or a soft hake paintbrush).
  • Humidity & Temperature: Fine art canvases thrive in stable environments. Display your painting in spaces with controlled humidity and temperature. Avoid hanging the artwork directly above heavy heat sources (like active fireplaces or radiators) or in high-moisture rooms like small, unventilated bathrooms.
  • Handling: When moving or hanging your artwork, always hold it securely by the wooden stretcher bar edges. Avoid pressing directly against the center of the canvas to protect the structural tension and the delicate, raised mineral reliefs.
