RUMANTSCH
by Sergio Aranda
RUMANTSCH is a powerful meditation on memory, identity, and the passage of time. Set within a weathered, sculptural landscape, a universally recognized national symbol remains visible while its meaning slowly transforms through layers of erosion and material history. The Swiss flag emerges from the surface as both an enduring emblem and an archaeological fragment, shaped by abrasion, texture, and the silent accumulation of years.
Rather than presenting a fixed image, the work invites the viewer to consider how symbols evolve over time. What appears stable and familiar gradually reveals itself as something more fragile, complex, and deeply human.
The Story Behind Rumantsch
Along the right edge of the composition, four almost imperceptible incised lines emerge from the textured surface. Their proportions correspond to Switzerland’s four national languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh.
The smallest line—barely visible at first glance—represents Rumantsch, one of Europe’s oldest living languages and the conceptual heart of this artwork. Though spoken by a small minority, Rumantsch embodies the resilience of cultural memory and the enduring presence of identity within a changing world.
Rather than making a political statement, RUMANTSCH reflects on coexistence, balance, cultural fragility, and quiet persistence. Through a language of material abstraction and contemporary archaeology, the painting transforms a national emblem into a profound reflection on time, permanence, and the delicate structures that hold communities together.
Materials & Tactile Depth
Handcrafted in Barcelona, Spain, this original mixed-media artwork features a richly sculptural surface created through layers of structured gesso, acrylic paint, mineral pigments, and organic compounds. The heavily textured relief evokes weathered stone, aged architecture, and surfaces shaped by decades of exposure and transformation.
Subtle traces of oxidation and erosion are integrated into the composition, creating a tactile topography that reacts dynamically to changing light. As shadows move across the surface throughout the day, new details emerge, reinforcing the artwork’s themes of memory, disappearance, and rediscovery.

Art Care & Preservation
Art Care & Preservation
- Display & Lighting: While the archival varnish provides high-end UV protection, we highly recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to direct, harsh sunlight. To fully appreciate the shifting shadows of the sculptural gesso, display the piece under high-quality ambient lighting or dedicated LED art spotlights.
- Dusting & Cleaning: Due to the rich, sand-crusted organic texture, dust may settle over time. Never use water, liquid cleaners, damp cloths, or chemical solvents on the surface. To clean, gently sweep the textured relief using a dry, clean, soft-bristled brush (such as a premium makeup brush or a soft hake paintbrush).
- Humidity & Temperature: Fine art canvases thrive in stable environments. Display your painting in spaces with controlled humidity and temperature. Avoid hanging the artwork directly above heavy heat sources (like active fireplaces or radiators) or in high-moisture rooms like small, unventilated bathrooms.
- Handling: When moving or hanging your artwork, always hold it securely by the wooden stretcher bar edges. Avoid pressing directly against the center of the canvas to protect the structural tension and the delicate, raised mineral reliefs.
