Sergio Aranda – Artist & Designer

I am Sergio Aranda, a Spanish‑Swiss artist based in Barcelona, working at the intersection of material, texture, and form. I have lived in cities such as Geneva, Madrid, and Paris, each leaving a lasting mark on how I see and create. During my time in Paris and Madrid, I ran artist studios that shaped my early professional practice. In addition to painting, I am a diamond expert gemologist (HRD), jewelry designer, and mixed-media artist. Later, I established my own galleries and stores in Barcelona and Madrid, where I sold my work directly and expanded my reach internationally. Across all my work, whether in jewelry or painting, I explore material, form, and the subtle dialogue between structure and transformation.

Artistic Approach

My paintings explore the intersection of contemporary abstraction and the physical traces of time. Rust, erosion, and weathered surfaces are not flaws but markers of transformation, carrying memory and history within layered, tactile compositions. Through scraping, abrasion, and the gradual layering of materials such as sawdust and pigment, I create surfaces that evolve over time, revealing both density and fragility.

Gold occasionally appears alongside rusted or darkened textures, forming subtle contrasts between luminosity and corrosion, permanence and decay. In this way, my work reflects the coexistence of construction and erosion, structure and transformation—a visual record of time, memory, and human presence.

Architectural & Pattern Influence

Patterns and architectural references play a central role in my work. Inspired by the rich architectural language of Barcelona, fragments of motifs emerge from the surface—fluid forms echoing Art Nouveau and the intricate decorative sensibility of Modernisme. These elements are never fully preserved; they appear partially, fragmented, or worn, creating a dialogue between ornament, material, and abstraction. By merging historical patterns with contemporary textures, the works develop a unique visual language that reflects both the city’s heritage and the passage of time.

Exhibitions & International Presence

My work has been shown internationally in Switzerland, France, and Spain. In addition to these exhibitions, it has been available directly through my own galleries and stores in Barcelona and Madrid, as well as via leading international platforms and my website, making it accessible to collectors worldwide.

Artistic Vision

Across painting and jewelry, my work explores the material world—how surfaces carry the passage of time, how patterns arise from transformation, and how objects can be renewed while preserving traces of their history. Whether in canvas or metal, each piece engages in a dialogue between texture, structure, ornament, and the subtle imprint of human experience.

Jewelry & Redesign

My experience in jewelry design continues to inform my painting practice. I have created pieces that draw on urban geometry, architectural detail, and the interplay of material and light. In both media, I approach materials with attention to structure and form, allowing surfaces to communicate their own history.

REDESIGN

I also explore the concept of “Redesign,” transforming worn, broken, or overlooked materials into new creations. Gold, diamonds, and other elements are carefully reimagined, giving them a second life and creating pieces that merge history, craft, and contemporary design.

This watch design is inspired by the distinctive geometry of Barcelona’s urban layout. The shapes on the dial echo the chamfered corners and grid structure of the city’s streets, translating the rhythm of Barcelona’s urbanism into a refined and contemporary timepiece.

I have long been drawn to the quiet poetry of rust and the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, finding beauty in transformation and impermanence. My work is rooted in texture, building rich, tactile surfaces on canvas with materials such as sawdust, where decay and simplicity coexist with subtle intensity.

My paintings explore the intersection of contemporary abstraction and the raw textures of industrial materials. Rust, corrosion, and weathered surfaces serve not as imperfections but as carriers of time and memory, transforming metal, paint, and mixed media into layered, tactile landscapes. Each work balances the formal language of structure with the organic unpredictability of decay, creating compositions that are at once industrial, expressive, and deeply contemporary.

Alongside their industrial textures, my paintings also draw inspiration from the rich architectural language of Barcelona. Fragments of patterns emerge from the surfaces, echoing the fluid lines of Art Nouveau and the decorative intricacy of Modernisme. These motifs are never fully preserved; they appear partially, worn, or fragmented, creating a dialogue between ornament and material. By combining architectural references with rusted, layered surfaces, the works develop a unique visual language where historical patterns coexist with contemporary abstraction, reflecting both the city’s heritage and the passage of time.
