Join me in Barcelona for a private one-to-one workshop dedicated to mixed media, texture and the experimental techniques I use in my own artistic practice.
This is an opportunity to go beyond what you see in my videos and work with me directly — exploring materials, asking questions, understanding processes and discovering how these techniques can become part of your own artistic language.
Every workshop is different because every artist arrives with different interests, experience and questions.

MY TECHNIQUES, YOUR ARTISTIC LANGUAGE
The purpose of these workshops is not to teach you how to paint like me.
It is to share the techniques, materials and processes I use in my own work, and give you the time and freedom to experiment with them in depth.
You may want to understand how I create eroded and weathered surfaces, master real oxidation, experiment with pigments and mineral materials, discover different crackle techniques or learn how I combine unconventional materials while keeping control of the composition.
We can concentrate on one particular process or explore several techniques during the same workshop.
And throughout the experience, we always keep one thing in mind:
My techniques should ultimately become part of your own work — not a copy of mine.
BEFORE YOU COME TO BARCELONA
Your workshop actually begins before we meet.
I’ll ask you what you would like to explore, which techniques you are particularly interested in and what you hope to take away from our time together.
If you already have an artistic practice, I’ll also ask you to send me a few photographs of recent works you particularly like.
This gives me a chance to understand your work before you arrive and prepare the workshop around your interests, your questions and your artistic direction.
There is no standard programme waiting for you when you walk through the door.

I’m constantly testing how materials react to one another, how surfaces change, how accidents can be used rather than corrected, and how something as simple as sand, paper or sawdust can completely transform a painting.

FROM TECHNIQUE TO ARTWORK
Learning a technique is one thing.
Knowing when, where and why to use it is much more interesting.
During the workshop, we don’t simply make samples or follow a sequence of demonstrations.
You will develop your own original artwork while we work together.
I’ll demonstrate my processes, explain the materials and share the small details that are often difficult to communicate through a video.
Then we apply what we discover to your piece.
We can change direction, combine techniques, solve problems and respond to what is actually happening on the surface.
Because that is how an artwork develops in a real studio.
Not everything needs to be planned.
Sometimes the most interesting part begins when a material does something you weren’t expecting.
At the end of the workshop, your original artwork is yours to take home.
WORK WITH ME IN MY BARCELONA STUDIO
I’m Sergio Aranda, a Spanish-Swiss contemporary artist based in Barcelona.
My work explores what I like to call the memory of materials — the traces left by time, architecture, erosion, oxidation and human intervention.
Texture has become an important part of my visual language, and my practice combines painting with pigments, rust, mineral materials, papers, sand, sawdust and many other materials that were never necessarily intended to end up on a canvas.
A large part of what I know has come from experimentation.
Trying things. Combining materials. Making mistakes. Understanding why they happened. And occasionally discovering something much more interesting than what I originally intended.
Through YouTube and my online tutorials, I’ve shared many of these techniques with artists around the world.
These private workshops are different.
Here we have the opportunity to work together, one-to-one, with enough time to go deeper, look closely at materials and discuss the decisions behind the technique.
A PRIVATE CREATIVE SPACE IN EL BORN
The workshop takes place in my private creative space in El Born, in the historic heart of Barcelona, inside a building dating from 1645.
It is both a working studio and a small private gallery, with many of my paintings around us.
That makes the space itself part of the experience.
When we discuss rust, texture, pigments, layering or finishing, I can take an actual painting from the wall and show you exactly what happened on its surface.
You can see the materials up close, touch the textures and understand details that are almost impossible to appreciate on a screen.
And outside the studio is Barcelona — a city whose old walls, architecture, worn surfaces, colours and traces of time have become part of my own visual vocabulary.
FOR ARTISTS WHO WANT TO EXPERIMENT
These workshops are particularly suited to artists and creative people who already feel curious about mixed media, contemporary painting and experimental materials.
You don't need to work like me.
Quite the opposite.
You may paint abstractly or figuratively. You may already have a very defined style or still be searching for one. You may have years of experience or simply be beginning to take your work more seriously.
What matters is curiosity.
If you want to understand materials, try techniques you haven't used before and bring new possibilities into your own practice, we will have plenty to explore together.
THE PRIVATE FULL-DAY WORKSHOP
The full-day private workshop lasts approximately 7 hours in one day.
Having a complete day together gives us the freedom to experiment properly rather than rushing from one technique to another.
We can test materials, allow surfaces to develop, discuss your work, change direction when necessary and gradually build your original piece.
Essential materials used during the workshop are included.
Different private workshop formats and options are available depending on what you would like to explore.

TAKING YOUR ARTWORK HOME
If you are travelling to Barcelona, tell me whether you are coming by plane, train or car.
Based on your journey, I can suggest different canvas or panel sizes so we can choose something appropriate for the workshop and practical for you to take home.
If transporting the artwork is not a concern, we naturally have more freedom with the dimensions.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
The workshops are private and take place by appointment in Barcelona.
The studio is located on the third floor of a historic building without an elevator, so please take this into consideration before booking.
And there is one other resident you should know about: Sienna, my cat, lives here too.
If you have a cat allergy, please let me know before confirming your workshop.

SMALL-GROUP & INTENSIVE WORKSHOPS
In addition to the private one-to-one experience, I occasionally organise small-group workshops and multi-day intensive experiences in Barcelona.
These give us more time to explore particular processes in depth and develop larger or more complex artworks.
