Edo Series
This body of work explores the quiet presence of time through layered mixed media compositions. Fragments of Japanese text—sourced from documents, books, and newspapers—are embedded into the surface as collage, carrying with them traces of memory, language, and history. The materials appear weathered and eroded, as if shaped by time itself. Surfaces unfold in an infinite range of tones between black and white, where subtle nuances create depth within a restrained, minimalist palette. A delicate presence of red emerges sparingly—an interruption, a pulse—bringing balance and tension to the composition.
Between texture and silence, these works invite a slow gaze, where meaning is not imposed but quietly revealed.
Using mixed media techniques, each painting is built gradually—layers are applied, compressed, and partially revealed to create surfaces that feel weathered and shaped by time. The textures evoke a sense of corrosion, patina, and quiet imperfection, echoing the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, where beauty emerges through age, irregularity, and natural transformation.
The result is a balance between structure and organic decay, creating works that feel both contemporary and timeless
Art Care & Preservation
Art Care & Preservation
- Display & Lighting: While the archival varnish provides high-end UV protection, we highly recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to direct, harsh sunlight. To fully appreciate the shifting shadows of the sculptural gesso, display the piece under high-quality ambient lighting or dedicated LED art spotlights.
- Dusting & Cleaning: Due to the rich, sand-crusted organic texture, dust may settle over time. Never use water, liquid cleaners, damp cloths, or chemical solvents on the surface. To clean, gently sweep the textured relief using a dry, clean, soft-bristled brush (such as a premium makeup brush or a soft hake paintbrush).
- Humidity & Temperature: Fine art canvases thrive in stable environments. Display your painting in spaces with controlled humidity and temperature. Avoid hanging the artwork directly above heavy heat sources (like active fireplaces or radiators) or in high-moisture rooms like small, unventilated bathrooms.
- Handling: When moving or hanging your artwork, always hold it securely by the wooden stretcher bar edges. Avoid pressing directly against the center of the canvas to protect the structural tension and the delicate, raised mineral reliefs.
