Smurf Happens! — 2026
Original 3D Mixed Media Pop Art on Wood by Sergio Aranda
Smurf Happens! is a vibrant, one-of-a-kind mixed media artwork combining playful pop art, vintage American imagery, urban street art, and richly textured surfaces.
Inspired by the spirit of travel and adventure, the composition brings together the iconic Smurfs, a distressed American flag, vintage Pan Am aviation graphics, and the colorful identity of Barcelona.
Papa Smurf and Smurfette take center stage, surrounded by bold graffiti-style lettering, nostalgic travel references, and expressive layers of paint. An American flight attendant, a vintage boarding pass, and the Catalan flag add a storytelling dimension, connecting New York and Barcelona through imagination and nostalgia.
Created on a substantial wooden panel, the artwork features 3D elements, raised textures, layered collage, acrylic painting, distressed details, and a weathered urban finish. Its richly worked surface creates a striking sense of depth and character.
The contrast between the cheerful cartoon figures and the aged, imperfect background gives the composition a contemporary street-art aesthetic, blending humor, childhood memories, and artistic freedom.
“I paint the memory of materials.” — Sergio Aranda

Art Care & Preservation
Art Care & Preservation
- Display & Lighting: While the archival varnish provides high-end UV protection, we highly recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to direct, harsh sunlight. To fully appreciate the shifting shadows of the sculptural gesso, display the piece under high-quality ambient lighting or dedicated LED art spotlights.
- Dusting & Cleaning: Due to the rich, sand-crusted organic texture, dust may settle over time. Never use water, liquid cleaners, damp cloths, or chemical solvents on the surface. To clean, gently sweep the textured relief using a dry, clean, soft-bristled brush (such as a premium makeup brush or a soft hake paintbrush).
- Humidity & Temperature: Fine art canvases thrive in stable environments. Display your painting in spaces with controlled humidity and temperature. Avoid hanging the artwork directly above heavy heat sources (like active fireplaces or radiators) or in high-moisture rooms like small, unventilated bathrooms.
- Handling: When moving or hanging your artwork, always hold it securely by the wooden stretcher bar edges. Avoid pressing directly against the center of the canvas to protect the structural tension and the delicate, raised mineral reliefs.
