Submerged Strata is an original textured abstract painting by contemporary mixed media artist Sergio Aranda.
Layers of turquoise, deep blue and almost black tones descend through the composition, creating an atmospheric surface that evokes water, erosion and the passage of time. Across the lower section, fragments of metallic gold emerge through the darker layers like traces of something precious preserved beneath the surface.
Rather than representing a specific landscape, the painting suggests an imagined environment — somewhere between submerged architecture, mineral formations and a distant horizon altered by time.
Texture plays an essential role in the work. Layers of paint and mixed media create irregularities, vertical traces and areas of relief that respond continuously to changing light. The metallic gold shifts in intensity depending on the viewing angle, sometimes becoming immediately visible and at other times almost disappearing into the surrounding blues.
The painting is constructed through a process of layering, covering, revealing and erosion. Earlier stages remain partially visible beneath the final surface, allowing the history of the painting itself to become part of the composition.
The 3.5 cm deep profile gives the artwork a strong contemporary presence and allows it to be displayed without a frame.
Part of the Strata of Time collection, this work explores the idea of matter carrying its own history — where color, texture and metallic fragments become traces preserved through successive layers.
